FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT…I’m getting what I deserve.

July 1st, 2005

For some reason, I was a terrible big sister. I do not know why and I wish it weren’t so but I was. Melissa, my only sibling, my baby sister and I fought our entire childhood. She could not say anything to me without being greeted with dirty looks and mean-spirited verbage. Here are some of the mean things I did to her:

  • Hid her inside our pop-up camper during a game and forgot she was in there…I did NOT, of course, realize that the door would lock when I shut it and that she would be very hot in there. Luckily she was found before any hyperthermia or dehydration could set in.
  • Fought with her and hit her when she attempted to call our wonderful Step-Dad “Dad”. “DON’T YOU EVER CALL HIM THAT AGAIN!!!”…SLAP, SLAP, SLAP! I could attempt to justify this by saying I was an angry, hormonal, bitter 12 year-old who was not offered counseling after my parent’s divorce but that does not change the fact that this was done to my poor sister who was feeling o.k. about getting close to Pete…our more than wonderful Step-Dad. She never did call him “Dad” again…I hope this is not my fault.
  • Convinced her that she was married to the ultra-icky Rusty, brother of our cousin’s best friend, after a fake marriage ceremony performed at our cousin’s swingset. She really was a beautiful bride.

Now, years later, I am getting exactly what I deserve. My two daughters HATE each other. They are mean, argumentative and are wasting precious childhood fighting over who knows what. Is this my fault? Are they like this because I was like that and the cosmos is paying me back? Is there anything I can do to reverse this cosmic punishment that has been visited on the heads of my daughters?
