My Favorite Beach Moment

August 20th, 2005

There have been a few moments in my life when I have realized that I am experiencing one of the “great ones”. That right now at this very moment in time, I am having an experience which will be flashing before my eyes on my deathbed. One night in Ludington, Michigan on the sandy shores of Lake Michigan I had such an experience. Putting this in writing does not capture the beauty of that moment, it cannot possibly convey it’s significance in my life but I’ll try anyway.
We were camping at the state park with friends and walked over the dunes to the beach. To me, the beach at night is full of beautiful darkness. I love the sound of the waves on the shore in the black night and the void that lays in front of me. Night beaching is peaceful and calming. So as we walked along that beach we looked and wondered where the lights in the distance were coming from. There were no boats that we could see, the land did not extend in that direction, but there was this light over the horizon. On first glance it looked like the light of a far away city but then following that light as it extended up into the sky, we realized we were seeing the Aurora Borealis. The lights weren’t colorful like I imagine them to be in the far north but they were waving at us. Just a soft white light, fluctuating in the sky…it sounds like such a simple thing but we were in awe. We said nothing and stood and watched those lights in the clear sky on a perfectly warm night. What a gift. I don’t know if this is a common occurrence in this part of Michigan, at that time of year but to me it felt like a gift directly from the universe. The children were asleep in their tents, no one else was on the beach except Chris, Scott and I and we were left alone to share this experience in silent awe. I know that as I have occasionally done since that night, I will reach the end of my life and recall the beauty of that moment with deep gratitude in my heart.
