Leap Year Fun for the Women!!

February 29th, 2008

Did you know that in English traditions Leap Year was the only time socially acceptable for a woman to propose marriage to a man?  Woo Hoo!  One of the queens, at the ripe old age of five, decided that men should have to pay a penalty if they were to decline said marriage proposal.  Of course the men, fearing they would be in danger of being forced to marry the town ugly girl, ended up adopting the rule that only on leap day could a woman propose and then collect a fine if the answer was no.  Fines could be anything from a kiss to money to silk gowns…must be up to the city council, I guess.

C’mon girls!!  Today’s your day!  I think that modern Leap Day should be free-drinks-if-he-says-no day at the bar, don’t you?
