Goodbye 2008
My husband mentioned to me last night that last year I wrote about saying goodbye to 2007 and wishing 2008 to be the most boring year ever. He let out a sort of laugh that made me realize that he may believe that 2008 was something other than a stellar year. Stellar would be a stretch. There were struggles, indeed. Plenty to last the whole year through. Two car accidents (no injuries to humans), one court date, one job lost (sort of), further decline on the slippery slope known as home equity, one kindergartener’s in school suspension and on and on it goes. Since I’m a glass-half-full sort of girl, I have to see the improvements that happened this year. Two fewer cross country moves, no weddings to plan and pay for, significantly less teenage angst and bitterness, fewer letters in the mailbox from my ex’s attorney, no harried exhausting trips across the country with four antsy kids… These are good things. We actually lived in one house for the entire year. Two cars are actually parked in our garage. Cars that we bought to fit our needs instead of making do with what we both had before. A new lawnmower is in the shed that starts without this being necessary. A pleasing gold color has been painted on living room and dining room walls. All this may seem like small potatoes but when you choose to start over in your thirties, every step toward reclaiming normal is such a triumph.
So on to 2009. A year in which we will both experience our 20 year high school reunions. Braces will be put on the teeth of #3. #1 will get her drivers’ license, start her senior year, apply for colleges and manage to piss us off seventy-two thousand times. Who knows what else could be possible…a fire pit in the back yard? A new coffee table? I now know better than to ask for boring ever again. But a coffee table? That could happen.
