Wait, You’re Listening?

January 13th, 2009

So today was day two of my new gig.  Have I mentioned that this hospital is brand new and not yet open for business?  Yesterday I listened to our CEO and President speak for an hour and a half or so.  This guy is like the freaking Pied Piper.  I’m not kidding.  If he told me to let my first born drive a car, I’d do it.   By the end of his speech, everyone in the room was on board and all “you-had-me-at-hello” about this concept.  All I could ask myself was why would this person be HERE when he can be almost anywhere in the world at this very moment?

This place is visionary.  If the concept turns into reality, and the Piper says it will, we will be revolutionizing the idea of health care to actually include health.   I will be working in an environment where there will be NO fried foods.  NONE.  PERIOD.  All of our foods will be healthful and much of it will be organic.  There will be 24 hour a day room service for our patients so that they can eat what they want at their convenience.  Cooking demonstrations will be offered to teach people how to eat whole and healthy.  The Food Network has been contacted and they are listening and excited.

Caribou Coffee was chosen for the hospital’s retail area instead of Starbucks intentionally because of Caribou’s superior commitment to the environment, sustainability and conscious business practices.    There will be strolling musicians to promote healing through music.  A hospital therapy dog will actually take residence in the hospital to simply be present for therapy for patients and guests.

There will be a wellness center that we are not allowed to call a spa but it’s a spa.  Within this non-spa, they will be performing complementary and alternative therapies such as *gasp* chiropractic and accupuncture.

Some of this was told to me during the interview process but I didn’t realize they actually meant what they were saying to me.  The Piper makes me believe they do.  What was SO exciting today was that I got to have a conversation with my new boss.  We were discussing some of the things that were good about my previous job, some of the clinical practices that seemed to make for better care.  I asked her if these things would be similar in this hospital.  What she said to me next was the most shocking thing of all.  “They will be if we want them to be.  I want to hear all of your ideas.”  I don’t know how to type the jaw drop that occurred when I realized that she was really listening to what I was saying.  I didn’t know people would do that!

I did find out today that the recipes will be available, as will many other types of things recommended by various doctors, in the retail area.

    Jessica,
You’ve hit the nail right on the head. Health care systems are starting to realize that patients can be consumers and choose their care elsewhere. This hospital is catering to those who still have their insurance, to make them want to come here. They’re also catering to the best talent in the area by telling everyone that they will be treated, in their workplace, as the most important asset the system has. The piper was back in today talking about the national press coverage we’re getting. I do feel so excited to be a part of this revolution.

There’s nothing that makes you want to stay in a hospital more, than the draw of good food. Whatever will happen to our healthcare system if people start looking to hospitals as resorts. Suggest a golf course, you know, for the fresh air and exercise!

That’s a good point. I wonder if they’ll be sharing recipes with the community? The man who is designing the recipes is a very prominent restaurateur in this area so he may be a bit protective!

See if she minds if you steal some of those healthy recipes and post them to your blog. Why not serve up a little preventative healthcare to your fellow moms and their families?
